New AI guidance for general practice
Many practices are already exploring how AI can support primary care, from streamlining admin to generating notes and improving efficiency. To support safe and effective use, we’ve developed practical guidance covering key considerations such as what AI is (and what it isn’t), privacy, security, ethics, risks, and Te Ao Māori perspectives. We also introduce a simple framework of four key principles for using GenAI in practice: Consent, Check, Privacy, and Secure.
The guidance (linked below), provides clear, relevant information to support AI use in your practice. If you have any questions or feedback, let us know. We’d also love to hear about your AI experiences — successes, challenges, and insights that might support others in the network navigating the same journey.
Privacy impact assessment
Privacy impact assessments (PIA) for Nabla Copilot and Heidi can be accessed on request, please email our practice systems support team.
Obtaining consent
Obtaining explicit patient consent for using an AI assistant in consultations is essential.
A basic consent form for Nabla Copilot, as a starting point, is provided in the resources below. For more detailed and comprehensive consent information, please refer to section Risk Management-001 of the PIA (R-001).
We encourage practices to tailor the consent language to suit your practice and patient population.
Other resources
Linked below you'll find suggested resources to help practices if they choose to implement Nabla Copilot.
The practice poster, practice consent, and GP-to-patient consent were developed by Nabla as a starting point for practices that use Nabla Copilot.
The resources would need to be adapted by practices that use other tools, and practices are advised to still do their due diligence on software they use at their practice.
