Looking after your health
Your general practice is often the first place to go for health advice, treatment and ongoing care. This page is your starting point for practical information on how primary care works, with links to trusted health information for you and your whānau.
Regular check-ups, keeping up with recommended screening, and getting vaccinated when you're due can all help catch problems early or prevent them altogether. If cost, transport, or feeling safe and welcome at your practice are barriers for you, talk to your general practice team — they may be able to help with payment plans, online or phone consults, or connecting you with services that feel more culturally safe.
If you're living with a condition like asthma, diabetes, or high blood pressure, keeping regular appointments and staying in touch with your practice makes a real difference. Your GP and practice nurse are there to support you, answer questions, and adjust your care plan as your needs change.

Getting care & support
Looking for information about general practice, enrolment, after-hours care or online services? Start here.
Enrol with a practice
Enrolling with a general practice helps you build an ongoing relationship with a healthcare team that knows you and your health history over time, not just the issue that brought you in that day. It can also mean lower fees and better access to services, follow-up care, screening and support linked to your practice and PHO.
Patient portal & online services
Coordinate health services across the region. We bring together practices, specialists, and community health providers to make sure services work well together - whether that's making it easier for your GP to refer you to a specialist or improving communication between your practice and the hospital.
What is virtual care?
If you need medical help outside normal opening hours, contact your practice first. They can guide you to the right care, which may include phone advice, urgent care, a virtual GP appointment, or another local after-hours service. If it is a medical emergency, call 111 straight away.
After-hours care
Enrolling with a general practice helps you build an ongoing relationship with a healthcare team that knows you and your health history over time, not just the issue that brought you in that day. It can also mean lower fees and better access to services, follow-up care, screening and support linked to your practice and PHO.
Safe & secure
Your information helps your practice support your care and manage your enrolment. It is handled carefully and securely, in line with health privacy requirements
How PHOs help
Primary health organisations help strengthen primary care in local communities. General practices receive PHO support and funding for a range of services that help care stay connected, accessible and affordable. That includes things like immunisations, health checks, and support for ongoing health needs.
