Updates to Bowel Screening in the MedTech Patient Prompt
On Wednesday 20 July, electronic functions are being added into the Bowel Screening MedTech Patient Prompt in the Te Manawa Taki (Midland) region.
These changes will enable GPs to send information directly to the Bowel Screening National Coordination Centre (NCC) for action.
After a conversation with a patient, GPs will be able to send the following to the NCC.
- Medical exclusion from the National Bowel Screening Programme (NBSP).
- Withdrawal from the NBSP.
- Order a FIT kit for NBSP priority populations (Māori, Pacifica, deprivation 9-10 residents).
Further information on the new electronic functionality can be found below.
To enable these changes a file needs to be installed. The file will be available on Wednesday 20 July on the BPAC main menu via news link.
For further information, please contact your practice development facilitator or the BPAC support line on 0800 633 236.
News item for install of BPAC prompt changes for bowel screening
Practices will find the news item on the BPAC main menu under 'News'. To remind you to run the news item, a message will pop up when you go into BPAC to let you know it is there.
The news item will tell you what to do and will have links to click to install the changes to the prompt. BPAC helpdesk will be on hand to support this if you have technical difficulties. If you have questions around the programme please contact your practice development facilitator.
If you have concerns about installing yourself, it is suggested practices contact their tech support to let them know this is coming and book in a time to complete the install after 8 September.
Troubleshooting install issues

Patient prompt: changes to the prompt support
Patient prompt suggests an opportunistic discussion and offer to support the ordering of FIT kits for eligible patients.
If the patient has completed their FIT kit, and a positive result is received by the practice, the GP will have the results discussion with the patient then it will prompt the GP to send the positive bowel screening referral to the local bowel screening team.
Troubleshooting prompt in practice
- If practice team members are unsure of the eligibility rules for the NBSP: please see the National Bowel Screening Programme page for your locality.
- If practices need support around coding and mapping of codes of patients, please see the BPAC patient prompt user guide. If further support is needed please call BPAC helpdesk.
