PHO immunisation update

Te Whatu Ora's priority for primary care is to improve childhood immunisation rates. General practice plays a key role in childhood immunisation, which is recognised through the 24-month immunisation goal as an indicator in the Quality Improvement Programme. 

In recent months Te Whatu Ora has developed this into a Te Manawa Taki System Level Measure (SLM) improvement plan for all PHOs in the region. There are six focus areas for PHOs and practices that relate to immunisation improvement and include creating culturally safe environments, addressing vaccine hesitancy and misinformation, and reviewing pre-call/recall processes. You may have seen activity supporting this plan with our outreach and extended care teams collaborating with partners to support community events.

AIR will be used to reflect progress in each district alongside a PHO report. Over the past few months our data team has been working with the AIR team to improve reconciliation rates with practice data and advocate on behalf of practices for further improvement to the AIR system. The rates are showing improvement. AIR has released recommendations on how to practices can improve reconciliation rates. We are currently working through this guidance, and you can expect to see this, along with aspects of the focus areas mentioned above, in discussions with district teams.
