IV cannulation skills stocktake

Te Whatu Ora is asking general practices across Aotearoa New Zealand to complete a brief stocktake of nurses' IV cannulation, infusion, CVAD, and port access skills. Responses are wanted by close of business Thursday, 2 April 2026.

The stocktake is part of the national Extended Primary and Community Care (EPCC) programme and will help build a picture of current primary care capability across Aotearoa. Responses will directly inform planning and delivery of oncology and other infusion services closer to home for patients and their whānau.

They'd like every practice to respond, even if no nurses hold these skills

Only one response per practice is required. If your nurses have no current or previous skills in IV cannulation, infusion, CVAD, or port access, it is still important to respond, if possible. This helps distinguish genuine skill gaps from survey response gaps, and ensures the national picture is accurate.
