Cardiovascular risk assessment in primary care

Pinnacle, in partnership with the Heart Foundation NZ, is bringing practical workshops to Taranaki this December. Join nurse lead Leonie Cowie and the Heart Foundation team to explore the latest guidance on CVD risk assessment, management, and prevention. With four session times available (all the same session), there’s an opportunity for every primary care and allied health professional to attend.

    About this event

    Pinnacle, in partnership with the Heart Foundation NZ, is bringing practical workshops to Taranaki this December.

    Guest presenter: Leonie Cowie – Nurse Lead, Clinical Team, Heart Foundation NZ.

    Pinnacle is pleased to offer four opportunities to attend this interactive study session (all sessions cover the same content - you only need to attend one). We’ve partnered with and funded the Heart Foundation Team to deliver these workshops in Taranaki for you and your teams.

    About the workshop

    This session focuses on primary cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk assessment and management.
    We’ll also touch on secondary prevention, highlighting why triple therapy is important.

    What you’ll learn

    Each session will cover the following kōrero.

    • Overview of primary prevention equations and PREDICT.

    • Gaps in CVD risk assessment – including people with other risk factors and those with serious mental illness.

    • Blood pressure: New international classifications, targets, and management.

    • Lipids: Guidance, targets, and management.

    • Aspirin guidance.

    • Importance of shared decision-making and the role of the multidisciplinary team (MDT).

    • Resources and suggestions to support patient engagement.

    Small group discussions

    (Usually time for two breakouts per session)

    • Primary prevention case studies.

    • Secondary prevention case studies.

    • +/- blood pressure scenarios.

    • +/- cholesterol scenarios.

    Session times and RSVP

    Choose between the following sessions (all sessions cover the same content). For catering and space purposes, please RSVP using the form below. 

    • Session 1: Monday 1 December, 3.00–5.30pm, Pinnacle office New Plymouth – For all nurses and primary care teams.

    • Session 2: Monday 1 December, 6.30–8.00pm, Pinnacle office New Plymouth – For all nurses and primary care teams (shorter session with less breakout time).

    • Session 3: Tuesday 2 December, 10.00am–12.00pm, Pinnacle office New Plymouth – Aimed at Pinnacle allied health team (Extended Care and HIPS). If spaces remain, will open to nurses and primary care teams.

    • Session 4: Tuesday 2 December, 2.00–4.30pm, Centennial Rest Rooms Stratford – For all nurses and primary care teams.
